    To hardface or not...

    A pleasing situation came up.

The skid plates on the snow plow wore through and the normally curved shoes separated from the shanks. Sorry, no pics yet as I am stuck at home with the Martian Death Flu, again.

This is elegant since I need stick time placing beads in a row over and over and this repair calls for exactly that. Now for the composition.

Since this is just a wear surface puck I was thinking a 70XX rod to attach and re-dome the shoes. Should / can I use a surfacing rod to cap them off or just use whatever I have lying around as I will probably have to do them again next year?

My little troglodytes are hard on the equipment and I was going to change out the now bent and fangled steel scraper bar to a poly scraper and the shoes will need to carry more of the load.

What do my more experienced compadres suggest?

I would use the surfacing rod, I assume that surfacing rod is hardened steel. I had one of those poly scrapers, I tore it up on a raised man hole cover and went back to the standard scraper.

You need a hard surfacing electrode but I can't recall what spec they are. If your local shop can't tell you, try asking on the welding forum since that's where I think there was a guy resurfacing a cat front blade and someone there might give you the rod spec.

Depends what type. 316 is not bad. But once you get into Al6... That has excellent wear resistance due to the nickle content.

IMO stainless would wear longer then mild steel but would not be worth it in a situation as a wear pad.

Talking about hard surface rod I picked up some this summer and couldn't get it to work. Thinking they gave me a DC type but not sure. Would not hold a arc on AC then the rod would just turn red. The rod is Ranite D, assume the D is for DC which is probably my problem. Stuffs not cheap either at $9/lb can't remember but at 1/8" that's 10 or 12 rods. Need to check next time if they have a AC version, with the price of replacement parts on farm machinery I want to try to use a little to extend the life of a few things.

the 7018 rod is great for build-up and to have hardfacing overlay.... i do this a really freakin lot! in my opinion, the amtec hardfacing rods are the best on the market, albeit a little pricey, they lay down real nice and are buttery smooth in the puddle.... you will need to run them DCEP....

as for other questions, yes, stainless does wear better than carbon steel, but ar-400 wears twice what stainless does and is half the price, dig?

depending on what gauge, but generally its between Aluminum and Mild Steel, in terms of resistance.
