2 Motors

I'm highly fascinated and into alternative energy & would like to maybe make my old truck run on gas and electric. Since I have a slant 6 there is some room under the hood for a good sized electric motor. How can I run 2 motors off of 1 trans. independently from each other? The trans. is a 3 speed standard and if that wont work how bout one with a transfer case?

Just dreaming right now but if at all possible I would like to try it down the road.

you would have to connect to in front of the transmission somewhere.. probably like at the flywheel somehow.... it would be pretty inefficient as at that point you would have to spin the crankshaft and internal engine components with the electric motor....

you could drive it after the transmission, you would put transmission in neutral, and use the electric motor to control speed as it would be direct drive...

i have seen something driven this way ,cant remember where though, they had a sprocket mounted between the transmission yoke, and the u-joint cap or just off the u-joint cap and drove off the sprocket.. you could use a cogged belt or whatever to drive it at that point....

it would probably turn your bed into a large battery tray though..

You should check into biofuel using waste vegetable oil. That way you could use your engine but power it with free or very cheap fuel.

that won't work, it's a gas engine. I have a 40' MCI-8 bus that I run on straight veg oil, I have driven 36,000 miles on $1,000.00 in diesel. I built a complete onboard filtering/processing system, it also has solar hot water and a small solar electric panel.

I wonder if you could run the front wheels off an electric motor somehow and leave the rear stuff alone.Just thinking out loud.

have you checked out a propane conversion, bet that slant6 would run good on propane... might be somewhat of a hassle to keep propane handy though.

propane is currently $2.50 a gallon in my area.. you could purchase or lease a large 500 gallon propane tank and have your own fill station at your home...but neighbors might not like the large tank if your in a subdivision..

something you could check on is the efficiency of propane compared to the efficiency of gasoline used with a slant6.. i use to frequent slantsix.org a lot of smart guys there.. several were turbo charging for added efficiency and power..

with projected gasoline prices of over $4 a gallon it might be wise to start looking for alternative fuels such as propane..

Been thinking about that idea on the back burner if the other won't work, but it would be a lot more work/money plus I want to keep my straight axle front end

Propane is kind of pricey here and is like gas/diesel subject to steep increases in price. I want freedom from big oil or at least paroled for a while

If it is a 4wd truck you could make it 2wd and hook a electric motor to the front drive shaft. I think that would work any way. If you had a transmission with a PTO of some sort I think you could put power in instead of take it out. I wouldn't try it on my daily driver but it would be fun to try.
