    For solidworks, you want to take a night class and purchase it as a student. I think this brings the cost to under $100. The other way is to have one of your kids who you are paying big dollars to send to school to purchase it for you (student edition). Otherwise the investment is very large for hobby useage.

    iski the 2d version is givin me a headache.... lol but on the upside it is working in linux. i hope to get a cnc built in the nearish future. have you used the 2d for much cnc or has it been mostly 3d drawings?

    some other free 2d design software are
    Qcad
    Solid Edge 2d by Siemens looks nice, it rivals Draftsight
    Librecad

    Gsimple is a free cad/cam program that looks pretty decent actually.. it almost looks like an old version of mastercam, you can import and export dxf files with it..
