Hello, I love Solidworks. They are now providing a free DWG editor for Windows, Mac, and soon for linux. I am going to try it out soon, and think it may mesh nicely with EMC2 which also uses linux.

Gadget, installed and opened some files and moved some lines. It is only 2D, but it looks good. I am not used to working directly in 2D anymore. The 3D solidworks program has spoiled me.

I played with it some yesterday myself. Looks pretty good for 2D which is what I do most. However, with Alibre CAD installed I doubt I will take the time to learn Down Draft better.

Gadget, at the moment I feel the same. I can get around in the 3D Solid-works package, and get 2D drawings from the 3D image with a click of the mouse.

I have used Q-Cad when drawing up plans for my house. It worked pretty well but I can see using it as a pro would be a pain. I spent the $30 or so for the extra features and it did improve things.
I am downloading draft Sight now to see how well it works.

Another relatively inexpensive option is TurboCad. I have used the trial to design a couple small things and had them CNC cut. The 2D "designer" version is $100 and does DXF files so that may be an option for y'all. I don't think it's too difficult to use but does need a bit of training and time to get used to it.

I am using BobCad-cam. I paid $300 for the program. The program is easy to use and will generate gcode. There is a free demo on line.
