    Lincoln ProMig 140 Help.

I wonder if one of you knowledgable guys can help me out.
I bought a Lincoln ProMig 140 welder for my workshop. I set it up 110v, put the gas to it, but it doesn't seem to weld hot enough. I tried welding 16g box section on full power, which should have blown a hole in it, but hardly got the steel hot.
I wondered if anyone has had the same problem.
I don't know too much about the 110v power supply here in the US, I'm used to 240v and 400v supplies down under.

Well the 110 v machines are certainly lower power but should have done better than you describe....and we know from your bio you know how to use it! This forum may not have too much info on the lincoln welders, you should post your question also on weldingweb.com under their llincoln section and bet you might get someone who has more experience with that unit.

If you're looking at some add'l equipment check out the Longevity stuff, pretty neat packages at some good prices.

    Mike,
The way the welder is wired from 110 to 220 is different. I wonder if you have the unit set up for 220 but connecting to 110. If you are doing this you will only have about half the power you should.

    ProMig Help.

Thanks. It is a 110v unit and was already wired straight out of the box. I am a little hesitant about delving into the guts of the machine while it has a 3 year warranty. I may just take it back. I was looking for a quick fix.
    Thanks for your help anyway.

I hope the neutral and the ground wires are not reversed somewhere.

Make sure the metal torch liner is solidly connected from the hub to the tip. We don't want the pinch rollers providing all the welding current. I am not familiar with that machine but it may have a thumbscrew on the hub just after the rollers (clamps down the spiral metal liner) that is loose.

Double check the input voltage on the black & white wires.

Some pics and more info would be cool.

    ProMig 140 Issues.

Thanks Uncle Ed, I will check all those things out. I don't know why I didn't think of the liner being loose. I will try to post some toy pics.

Well Uncle Ed, I pulled the handpiece apart, checked the liner, pulled the wire out unplugged a socket (handpiece power), looked at it, couldn't find squat wrong with it.
Put it all back together and now it works.
Couldn't tell you what I did to fix it, it's a bloody mystery to me.
It welds fine now with all the heat I need.
    Thanks for the help.

There are some things mere mortals are just not meant to discover and I am glad Saint Vidicon of Cathode has smiled upon you.

Now go sacrifice a roll of wire to the Welding Gods!
