    LC-416 has arrived

    Hello all,

I got my LC-416 today and the first task will be to get the power and plug all hooked up. My stick holder was damaged during shipping by DHL so I have to also deal with that tomorrow. I looked for detailed manuals on wiring and also downloaded the manual but I think I got the wrong one?? The one I downloaded seems to be a work in progress with notes on what should be added to the manual. Is there a newer complete manual? One was not sent with the package. I looked at the wiring manual for the plug and maybe hitting Home Depot would be the best bet to find out what plug I need?

I have 200AMP service coming into my house. I have installed 15,20,30, and 50AMP fuses into my junction box and also ran the wires so I know how to do that. The last one was the 30AMP for my dryer. My question is - What do I need to run for the LC-416 and what plug should I use for it? Any help or advice on where to get the answers is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

OK I never got a response but talked to my electrician friend and thought I would share. The unit required a 30AMP breaker and a 10-2 wire to be run. I just picked up a recepticle and a plug that could handle 30AMPS. I went with one that locked into place. I can post pictures if anyone is interested.

Sorry about the non response JDC, this one slipped by me. You are correct on the 10/2 with ground. A 30 amp 220V circuit also is correct. I believe this unit can also be wired 120 but you will not have the power you would with 220.

I just figured maybe no one knew . I have been putting off hooking it up for too long now so I just wired it today and also ran a dedicated 20AMP line for my other tools and compressor. I am still not sure what it wants for grounding though? I checked some posts and it looks like I need to run a wire outside to a copper rod in the ground?

    Re: LC-416 has arrived

Your post sound almost like mine a few weeks ago....I have also just experienced the same thing with my new LC-416D.....The manual, forget it. In all actuality there is none..... As for the wiring if you're just going to use 220v then you're probably all set. It sounds like you know what to do. If you are going to want to interchange from 110v to 220v ( like if you take it somewhere ) you can see what I did for a multi volt adaptable extension cord that works great. You'll have to check back through my post under Multi units or electrical.

Sorry to get a response to this question so late, wiring to 220v allows you to use your unit to its full potential by increasing double the horsepower!

For 220v, a 30 amp plug will do. Please make sure you use the green with yellow as the ground and the other two wires connected to the hot terminal (doesnt matter which wire) for 220v.

Hope that helps and happy posting.

    JDC,
It isn't absolutely necessary to connect an earth ground to the post but it will help you with EMI interference with other electronic equipment. I used my LS 160P for quite some time with this ungrounded. I did start using ground though to help cut interference with my CNC table.

    Re: LC-416 has arrived

I thought that was the case. I always overdo it haha . Today I went out and picked up an 8ft grounding rod for about 10 dollars. I soldered a piece of 10-2 bare copper wire to it and sunk it in the ground outside my shop. It only took me about 15 minutes to do and I guess in the future it will pay off if I start getting involved in more things.

I fired up the unit and was playing with the plasma cutter. A buddy of mine works in a machine shop and he brought me over some scrap metal. I have to say I am new to this but I am very impressed with how the machine is cutting. It is like putting a hot knife through butter! I realize now that I need to make a workbench as well. Cutting on the ground is not so easy!

    Mad4metal,
I think the extra ground is a good idea and may in fact be a safety feature (makes sense to me) All I am saying is it is not harmful to the welder (machine not operator) if it isn't hooked up.
I will defer to Simon as to whether the ground is esential for safety.
