That's the same way i have my 3 wire power cord wired to the breaker box.2 hots and a ground.Looks good to me.

I have a 220 outlet in my garage. 40 amp dedicated for a welder that some day I will buy. (I actually use it now to backfeed my generator into.) It is the big huge 4 prong twist lock outlet.

I am assuming that you just need the neutral and the two hots wired, and leave the common. (since it goes to the same bus bar in the fuse panel.) Is it ok to do this? Is the only danger that it will look goofy having a giant plug attached to the skinny wire?

Do not leave the common! It is there to save your life! The common provides a low resistance path so your body won't become one. What is it with Longevity and ignoring the importance of grounding?

If your cord on your welder has 4 wires, i would hook them up.My miller sync 250 only has 3 wires hardwired to a dedicated 125 amp breaker,coming off of the main breaker box from the pole and a ground rod hooked up just outside the 125 amp breaker box.But if you are using it for a generator, i would definitely hook up the white wire for protection as Steelburner suggested.

I have a 200DX on order and I was looking at my breaker box getting ready to wire in a plug. My Miller 250 Dialarc is wired straight into the panel on 50 amp breakers. What size breakers do they recommend on the 200DX? I have looked at the manual front and back and cannot find anything on amp draw or recommendations.

30 amp 2 pole breaker will work just fine.
