    Students to be certified...

Apparantly one of the local Jr. Colleges in the area found out that I had some good welding students and that the other Jr. College was recruiting them left and right... These kids are 10th and 11th grade mostly by the way.... They aren't even Seniors yet! Anyway, we haven't had much luck getting this one Jr. College to work with us on visitation and recruitment and such which is their loss because we are in their district... Well, they apparantly heard that the other Jr. College was trying to get our students to come to their program after graduation and that has prompted them to step up to the plate.

They are bringing the Welding on Wheels program to my shop for the next 3 weeks! They are going to put my students that want to participate through an intensive 3 week after school training program for 4 days a week from 3:30-7:30. They will be AWS Certified if they complete and pass. They are also going to get a 1/2 credit towards graduation from the high school! None of this is going to cost them OR the school one dime!

I wish I would have had the opportunity to do this when I was in highschool.

    Later,

    Scott

Maybe your students could teach them a thing or two!! I bet their teacher could.

    Cheers.

I don't know if I would go that far are not. I still have a lot to learn myself. But, it is nice to know that I am confident enough in my student's ability that when something comes in for a repair or if something needs fabricating that I can get one of the students to do it and not have to worry about whether or not it will hold.

My dad worked offshore and he kinda started teaching me when I was younger helping him. Offshore welding is sometimes a little different, or that was what daddy would say. He used to think that everything needed a 7018 bead cap on it. It has taken me a little while to get over the "bigger the bead the stronger the weld" mindset. Pops and I both have learned since then that bigger is not always better. I try to learn something new every chance I get.

    Thank you Bluesman.

Thank you Bluesman for taking the time and effort to teach these students one of many skills that they will use in their lives.
It is people like you that show a positive interest in their lives that some of them would otherwise not have. You have already made a difference in this world whether you realize it or not.
My wife is a teacher also teaching, 3rd grade and she too has a special ability to break down the barriers and light a spark in kids that are low in all levels.
A hands on interest like this can keep these young people from the temptations in life, drugs, alcohol use and violence.
Thank you once again. I only wish I could do the same thing.
