Well you look at alot of airplane welding and that was done with oxy-acetylene and many of them are still flying today. Not many will use OA today because the HAZ would be to large and the torches may make the grain smooth and weaken it.
Please hear me out, getting back to why smaller transformers are limiting......in smaw and mig welding when you pull away with the stick you decrease the welding voltage, the arc breaks and you lose heat, in short circuit welding the same is happening at much faster rate, the less voltage you have available, the lower the arc heat, and more splatter and poor weld quality and penetration. The break is more violent, with less dig force.
If this is all I had well then I would look into ways to mitigate problems by pulling the electrode to get more penetration, and bevels.

people are going back to OA welding in aircraft at least the personal and hobby guys but using Henrob type torches which are amazing.
I was being sarcastic about OA welding because he only uses coat hangers and his welds look unsafe & crappy

If you are unsure about welding it yourself tack it with your mig and then take it to a welding shop and have them do it. Shouldn't cost much. If it were mine I know I could do it and I would trust the welds. We all have our opinions...

Yes Charlie, those Henrob torches seem to have some amazing abilities but they are abit pricy, like everything else in welding, I'd like to get one someday, and looked at getting one ahead of the 200PI,but talked myself out of it, alot of guys welding aluminum with them. The company has changed hands I think over the years, it would work out well here.

I saw one on Craigs list a year ago when I was staying in Fort Collins, Co. for $50 it was the whole kit. I knew nothing about them and passed on it turns out a guy I know from another forum bought it. Kicking myself every time I think of it.

Reminds me about way back in 87 I had begun locksmithing on the side, still do, actually I liked to pick locks.. anyhow I purchased a curtis key clipper from the ad in local bargain finder and when I went to pick it up the guy had another clipper I knew nothing about and we dickered over it about 15 minutes and he would not budge and we went our separate ways.Turns out he had three key clippers he sold and I got all the parts for the two and so the guy that got shortchanged offered me to give his money back and I did, so I made out well but the clipper I did not want to pay a few measley $20 extra for I have been searching for 24 years and cannot find one...wish I would have known better at the time,
so I know how you feel.
Learned my lesson well.
