    Bevel Edges?

At what thickness does it make sense to start beveling edges in order to get stellar penetration? I'm using 2"x4"x1/8" steel to build the chassis for my car and am curious if I should be beveling the edges at the mitered joints? Thanks guys.

That makes sense if I'm using 1/8" sheet to build a box or c, but if I already have two pieces of tube miter cut to create a 30* angle, should I bevel those two tubes before welding or butt them? I'm going to be fishplating all these joints as well.

I gotcha! I should have read that better! lol
If you are fishplating then I recommend leaving about an 1/8 inch gap between the tubes which will allow Full penetration!
If you do not want the ugly look of the fishplate then put your fishplate on the inside of the tube by drilling 1 or 2 -1/2" holes in the face of the tube.
Put the plate in the tube, Plug weld it through the holes. Now that it is attatched to one tube, drill out your second tube, like the first.
Now leave about a 1/4" gap between your tubes and weld the gap. Now you have 3 surfaces to weld to and it can be cleaned up as if it were never there!

what process are you using the weld up the joints TIG MIG ?

with either if you have the heat set right and have good tie in on each toe of the weld and in the root .. you can take some scrap and weld that up cut it in half and see what you pen is and adjust the heat accordingly
also if your worried about pen weld them Vert UP when possible
I start beveling at above a 1/4 inch

What would be the max & method with my Millermatic 140 that you would dare weld?

This sketch was done in Paint - Not the greatest capabilities but it's what I have to work with!
I'd prefer a pencil! Too much work to upload it though!

I'll weld 2 inch plate with your welder! Bevel the entire thickness and make 20 passes! No Problem !

Thanks a bunch Aaron and Wookie. Penetration is my main concern at this point so I've been playing with my settings today on some scraps. For simplicity sake I'll keep the fishplates on the outside, I want to get this done sometime in my life... Seriously though, almost none of the fishplates will be visible and everything under the car will be undercoated so I'm not too concerned with the look of the fishplates themselves. Thanks again, I appreciate your insight.
