Question about welding stainless to carbon steel

I want to make a short spider chuck for my lathe to work on rifle barrels shorter than 18" working through the head stock. I have a piece of shedule 80 2" stainless steel pipe that I'm going to cut to 1" long or so and the thread .5"x24 TPI at the four points of the compass and use the bolts for dialing in the breech or muzzle of the barrel. I want to weld that piece of stainless pipe to a carbon steel D1-3 flat back cam lock. It's basically about a 1" thick piece of steel. Is it possible to do this and if so should I tig it? If I tig it what Rod and tungsten should I use? I also can stick it and I have some 6010, 6011 and 6013 rod here already.

    Thanks in advance.

You could probably tig it with some silicon bronze filler electrode and 2% thoriated tungsten.
I'll get the exact # off the rod box if you want.

er70 s-6 filler will do just fine, it has enough nickel in the mix to weld to the SS.... the only thing you WILL run into is the welds will rust.

---------- Post added at 08:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:34 PM ----------

7018 stick rods will weld it best...

I can run over to the LWS tomorrow and pick up some 7018 rod. Rust won't be a problem. I use a LOT of oil when I cut and nothing has rusted yet. I can always throw some industrial paint on there if it's a concern though.

I have read that 309 rod is used for a lot of carbon steel to stainless welds.

I also use SS309 rod for this type of welding.

I dont have any experience with lathes but that sounds like it will be a pain to get the barrels centered in the chuck. Will that not cause you issues?

if there is going to be any load on the weld use some 309ss or er70s6 if you are going to be tiging it
silicon bronze is for all non structural joints where no load is going to be associated

just got done with a huge SS job where 14 ga 304SS was but welded to 2x2x1/4 wall square tube of a-36 carbon steel.... that has been painted and also subjected to extreme heat and moisture (so the plain steel was already rusted underneath the paint) the job boss wanted us to use 308l solid wire mig, problem: overhead, outside, dissimilar metals, thick to thin..... used 1/8 7018 rods for the whole job, 60 ft long welds in total, but joining the sheets to each other, used 308L and a mig.... i had to sign disclosure agreements, so there wont be any pics, but there was 90 pounds of 7018's and 5 rolls of wire laid down on the job, and me and my boys worked 14 hours a day to get er all done... it was pretty cool, 6 engine drives running full tilt, you could hear us down the road!
