Multi purpose units and MIG spool gun question

    Hello everyone,

My name is Stu, I am an avid hobbyist and i want to get one of the Multi-Purpose welders (MPWs) as soon as money allows to get some of my projects in high gear. many moons ago while comparing the various sellers of MPWs riland was working on adapting the spool guns to the machines, but they when belly up before any results where made. My question is has anyone done/considered the upgrade/mod as it where. having a mig for spot aluminum and steel would be wonderful for starting large projects the finishing with the tig.

Since i jumped to a threaded first a little about me. i am a mechanical designer for the aerospace industry, i have worked in and around dirt and tarmak circle racing since i was a teen and would love to get in on offroad rally. My most recent endevor is to supercharge my 99 Subaru legacy to which is well underway. I am a blacksmith, carpenter, landscaper, electrician and what ever hobbies i pick up tomorrow lol

Thank you all and i am happy to have joined this forum!

    -Stu

Hi Stu and welcome to the forum. We like pictures here so be sure to include some showing your work. Also, keep an eye out for the next contest here. The odds of winning a great new Longevity machine are very good.
I'm looking forward to seeing the supercharge work on the Suby. There are some racers here so you should have some good company.

Welcome to the forum Stu. Sorry, can't help ya with the spool gun upgrade/mod but maybe some others have some input for you. Are you planning on buying a Multi Process and a MIG? Hope to see some of your work on the Legacy!

sounds like you are looking for a mig and a tig machine since one is cv and the other being a cc machine but there are some cc/cv machines out there like the xmt 304-350 and lincolns cc/cv machines

Thank you all for the warm welcome to the forum. i will be posting up my welding adventure for the legacy as it develops. i will be rebuild the entire intake manifold with either mild steel or stainless depending on budget, right now my moneys are tied up with the engine shop inspecting my Frankenstein engine. Wookie,

CV and CC stand for constant voltage and constant current? if that is the case i can understand why the mod was never done. in that case i will purchase a MIG machine in the future after the Multi machine.

I believe Longevity may have a stick/mig machine, but the mig is spool gun so again you get into the trouble of cc/cv power source problem making it to complicated. Better off getting two separate machines although the concept seems interesting..would it sell?

your right cc is constant current and CV is constant Voltage which is for wire feeding GMAW/MIG
