I was just wondering if there is anything like an oscillating spindle sander for metal - or can I just use the one I have. I would be afraid the metal would mess it up.

You found the right place for your question atcig. I would agree with Charley, use it. One of my favorite tools is a 12" disk sander that I use for all metals. It's just so quick and easy. I'm betting the oscillating spindle sander will be equally useful.

I'll post some detail another time, but this is a belt sander I made a little while back. And use it for sharpening bits and chisels, was not hard to make.
It is conceiveable to make your own disc sander from an old motor and a steel pulley and cut a circle out of steel or even aluminum with a plasma cutter and weld to a pulley and fit the pulley to a motor.
An oscillating sander you have to think through alot more, how much paper you want it to use, the spindle diameter. The question is how would you make it oscillate? The only way I would think would be to have a two sets of gears, a set on each side along side the spindle motor running up a rack, and when it hits the top a monetary switch breaks the current and it drops the spindle, the spindle could then reset when it bottoms out and restarts the rack climb, simple ac circuit could do it.
