Very Small High Frequency ARC " FIX "

Upon receipt of my new Longevity Force Cut LP40D plasma cutter, i had a problem with almost no high frequency arc. Even though the air solonoid was passing air through the torch. With Simons help we traced the problem down to the high frequency copper coil wires. This is located on the center board at the front of of case. The coil is a heavy "flat" wound copper coil with 2 black wires. The wires have a plastic wire tie holding them together, each black wire has a spade connecter that plug onto the lower board on the front edge. The fix believe it or not is to cut the plastic wire tie and seperate the 2 black wires as far apart as possible. You will need to unplug the 2 black wires to seperate them. The plastic wire tie is difficult to reach to cut it off the wires, so BE CAREFUL. I used a tiny pair of electronics wire cutter. Its hard to believe that with the 2 wires touching that it will interfer with the high frequency arc BUT IT DOES. Since seperating the wires I have had no problems AT ALL !! Jim

    Joe,

The HF system is a nice starting system, but it does require mass amounts of shielding. Both should get the job done!

Does the LP50D have these same two black wire fix?
I hooked my machine up 120volt, and it does not want to start, unless you are just about touching, and then it won't hold an arc, unless you have hands and nerves steel.
I am on my way to the hardware store to pickup a 220V plug now, to see if this will correct the problem.

I would really like to use this on 120volt.

I have the same problem with my 160P. I have never used a plasma torch before, so I though that this was part of the learing curve. I will watch this post to see what happens.

Not to many replies to your post. So I called Simon about my problem. He gave me sugestions, which I tried with no sucess. Simon is going to replace the welder. I hope that the problem is the welder and not something that I did or did not do. When I ship the origional welder back I will try to find out the source of the problem. Either way I will post the solution.

Re: Very Small High Frequency ARC " FIX "

    Guys,

There are two bronze bolts inside the the machine where the black wires run to. They are of bronze or gold covered, which is the same area the HF arc starts if you click the trigger on the torch. You need to screw the bolt to the left or un-tighten to make more distance between the HF arc point to create a bigger arc.

We usually screw from the right side if you are looking at the machine. Be careful to not damage anything and make sure the power is off.

    Thanks
