I attach to the metal. I never considered attaching a stylus above, always thought about it in the same plane very interesting. The only difficulty I had when I used to use this method was keeping the motion slow and steady. If I use a foot pedal this would be much easier to do as I will have two free hands.
Now I'm curious if mine can't be made even better. It sounds like you have a real pantograph, which was my original goal, but as always I have several projects, so each one only gets enough attention to be good enough, but not what I really wanted
