Any inert gas and even O2 can be transported in any position, but if the tank is designed for a cap ICC says it has to be on and actually a weld shop can get fined if they release one without a cap. so no problem for most of our gasses except acetylene which can be transported lying down, but general rule of thumb is it has to be upright for at least a half hour before using to make sure the liquid inside (acetone) settles down. So if you are in a business where you take your tanks to do work, then the acet tank needs to be upright all the time; O2 can be laid on it's side.

You're lucky to have gotten one with a cap (although who knows what will happen when you trade it in for refill.

I used to have an 80 cf cylinder filled with C-25, but since I have to transport my welder a lot, I was getting tired of lugging it around. So I traded down for two 60's: one for C-25 and one for 100% Argon. But I was dismayed that both new cylinders came capless. Caps on gas cylinders seems like a smart safety feature, so I was surprised to learn that most smaller cylinders (60's and below) have no caps.

I use a "T" size tank and just throw it in the back of the pickup or blazer and block and brace it. All the way from across town with no problems. I try to center it though so if there are any side impacts they will have less potential for damage.

I just throw mine (the largest size) in my Landrover, I forget but its around 100lbs I think. And as Brad stated, on mythbusters they showed some serious missiles created from a compressed tank that could go through a brick wall.
