it is for protection from welding solids... i.e. when yer stick welding regualr steel or runnin fcaw... the smoke... thats what its protectin ya from.... it is not design to filter metal vapors like +6chromium... which mainly will come from welding and cutting stainless.... if im not welding stainless, i dont wear a mask at all..... i did weld in a chemical tank a few years back, and i had to wear scuba gear almost... air tanks and the whole bit, with a handheld lens thingy to weld with...... that sucked!!! it was hot!

i dont go for jobs like that anymore

Stan, would a paint respirator work? Probably not but worth asking.

Dan, if you don't already have that mask I wouldn't recommend it, not based on if it would give the proper protection or not I don't have a clue about that but due to the fact that I found it very uncomfortable and poorly assembled so I returned it. Just an FYI.

i dunno, gadget.... its not powered air, nor does it state metal vapor filtration..... thats something you would have to let osha or msha make the req filter

For painting cars I use a positive pressure loose fit hood. If you have facial hair a tight fit mask will not work. With a tight fit mask you also have to do fit tests often. I am pretty sure this is the same for welding. A supplied air hood is like having air conditioning for your head. There are several options in this link. http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawe...45_LSeries.pdf
If you are looking at a cheaper way to have a positive pressure hood setup here is what I would do.
Get a 3m L-503 bumpcap hood with welding mask. $282.54 There are other options here the 3m pdf link will tell more.

    optional auto dark adapter $458.70
    Breathing tube L-122 $68.31
    Air regulator V-300 $119.59
There are different air regulators that can heat the air(cold weather) and also one that cools it(hot weather).
hook this up to an oilless air compressor, otherwise you will need a breathing air filter. Make sure to pull fresh air through your compressor!
An air filter for example is a bullard 41p2 filter $223.70
    Total $470.44 solid shade total
    Total with autodark is $929.14
The best place I have found to buy safety products is Safety Products & Supplies, PPE, Material Handling Equipment, Industrial Supply, Respirators, Safety Glasses and Hard Hats!
You can also get a battery powered air filter that goes on a belt for better mobility. But the filter cartridges wont last long.
