    Hot weather welding/cutting protection

We had a hot weekend here in PA and I chose not to wear my protective leather jacket. Tee shirt caught fire while grinding with a 4-1/2" grinder. Only thing injured was my pride and the tee. Can anyone recommend some good, lightweight, welding gear?

I was at the local weld store the other day and there is now kevlar gear. I don't know if it is cooler or not but you might check it out.

Thanks all. Stopped by my local WS and found a lightweight welding jacket and also picked up some sleeves. They're branded Hobart and are black in color. Later on, I found the same ones at Tractor Supply. The jacket is cotton and fire resistant. Might burn thru, but atleast it won't burst into flames.
I'll have to see if I can find some light leather gear later on if the cotton doesn't hold up.

I received a set of welding sleeves for x-mas and have used them in my outdoor endevors . . weren't too bad, but then here in Louisiana we haven't reached our "Summer" yet . . .

    Confessions

Ruined on of my favorite shirts when I was just doing some quick welds. I had tacked along the close edge of a plate and when I leaned over the plate to tack some ears on the far edge it happened.

At first I thought I had gotten into a spider web under my welding table since I weld in the back yard, then I realized that my shirt had melted and stuck to one of the closer welds which was still hot. I had read not to wear synthetic shirts, but that didn't pertain to me of course. Dad was a welder all his working life and always wore heavy longsleeve work shirts.

Didn't feel the heat since I always wear a T-shirt too when welding, but the shirt now had a 3" hole in it. The other thing this little incident showed me was that I really needed to get a leather cover for my TIG torch cable, its vulnerable too.

For those of us in the heat zone!.....Texas and such, it's a hot proposition to weld. The best option I found is at northern hydraulics, for about 6 bucks you can buy their flame resistant green sleeves that you just pull up over arms and can still wear light clothes. They are great, low cost and keep ya from burning up the skin and hair....give them a try...
