    Question Need as much opinion

    Hi guys, here's pic of me tigin an 3/4" galvanized pipe to a mild steel plate.
    The pipe ticknss is -+2.5mm, the plate thicknss is about the same.
    Ground the surface of both to be weld.
    The process is TIG DC-, HF start, 80Amps, tung is 2% Lanth, pure argon 6-7LPM.
    Leakage test by filling the diesel fuel into the pipe, and thx God, there was no leakage.
    I'm here to listen to your opinion..thx in advance for opinion and suggestion.

    the 2 pores (fish eyes?) is not leak per diesel fuel test.

    The fish eyes are from contamination. Perhaps you didn't get all the zinc ground off. Otherwise it looks pretty good for a first timer. I see a tiny bit of under cut between the fish eyes in the post.

    I just don't have a lot of experience, but for working with galvanized, it looks excellent !

    ...and I would not have used diesel to test it as the oil would have contaminated any porosity... I would have used lacquer thinner or acetone or even water.

    I have very little experience with tig wlding, but looks good to me. Just have a question, why did you use deisel as a tst medium. As Rusty said water or acetone would have been better. Just my .02 cents

    I can tell you why to use diesel, if it is going to leak it will do it with diesel when everything else won't leak.

    i agree with poodle, diesel WILL find a way out. here is my take on this steph: slow down, put more heat on the plate and less on the pipe, adding filler with steel is not a rythm thing, its add and spread and add and spread maintaining puddle height and width. oscilate the torch more to give the weld bead the profile. on something like that, you should be "walking the cup" i am sure there are several vids on youtube explaining the cup walking dilly. the craters come from abrupt stops, not enough post flow or removing the torch before the post flow is done and not giving enough filler to the end of the weld. clean the parent metals better, this will help with cratering as well.....

    @Odleo n rustycase; poodle has unswer y'r question bout why using diesel fuel for leakage test. Kerosene even better but it's lil bit hard to find it for now. Water is slow to penetrate
    the crack/leak, acetone/thinner is fast to evaporate.

    @SICFab: thx four y'r contribution. About walking the cup, I think it's a lil bit harder, I'll practicing it in the near future. About undercut: I think I've feed too little amount of filler rod. (Oops...Undercut is for Gadget)

    OK... I KNOW diesel WILL find a messy way to get out if one exists ! lol

    and it will also leave residue that will need to be cleaned out with one of the clear solvents I had mentioned.

    AND, the clear solvents have less viscosity than the diesel, so will find a leak first.

    When they evaporate, following a Test Bad, there will be nothing to try cleaning up before repairing a defective weld.

    All said, it's darn good work on galvanized... horrid stuff!!!
