Gilly that spreading out of the bead is caused by what the industry refers to heat soaked material. When you start the weld most of the time the metal is cold unless preheated thus will take more input amps to create a puddle with proper penetration. As you weld the metal becomes heat soaked and really hot. after this happens you need less amps to weld because the metal is already at a elevated temp. The time to get to this heat soaked state varies with the base metal (the metals thermal conductivity) volume of the material ambiant conditions and so on.
Yeah - I'm betting the foot pedal would help - but I'm no expert either.
