    Received MMA 140

I received the MMA 140 as promised by Simon. The machine came in well packed and on schedule. It did have some handling marks but functioned (burned a rod) upon initial testing.

I was able to take some time recently to see how it did with burning a 1/8" E6011. The welder performed very well except for a few instances in which the arc went out for a fraction of a second. I made sure I had a good ground and also welded the material to the table to assure good contact.

It may have been something else and overall I am very pleased with the welder.

I made a page at http://weldingdata.com/WelderReviews/lo ... MMA140.htm that also has a link to video of 4 rods being used one right after the other. The video quality leaves somethig to be desired as does the weld. I was more interested in seeing how well the machine worked than how I welded. I am pretty sure with a little attention, this machine will make some nice looking welds. I may go with a heavier ground with more surface area. The "battery cable" type may not do a very good job.

Anyway, Simon- My preliminary thoughts are that this machine is worth the $. I'd love to check out a Miller Maxstar 150 side by side with it and see if its worth the $900.00 or more price I have seen. The output and duty cycles advertised seem to be pretty close.

I cleaned up the ground and rechecked all of my power cord connections. The machine still seems to randomly cut off for a fraction of a second. It is worse when I whip the electrode but even just welding with a constant 3/32" or so arc length it just cuts out then back on.

    Gerald,

Thanks for the post. I am checking to see why you are having an arc cut out from time to time.

    Thanks,

    Re: Received MMA 140

I just checked out the video and I have had this cutting in and out before. Two things (if memory serves me) caused it. Once the machine (Miller) was supposed to be 230 but my building had 208 voltage. It ran 7018 and tig fine but the 6010 and 6011 kept going out. The other time we were close to max on the amps and that drug the duty cycle down. we either used a smaller electrode using less amperage or made shorter welds to resolve that one.

We would be happy to do the side by side. We have Lincoln and Miller machines (transformer, generator and inverter type) you pick the challenger
Wat was the material thickness on that plate? (i could video it but i would have to ask for help getting it to the web- so far no luck with my site):
1 bad decision can wipe away years of good intentions~ Be careful!!

    Hey Ray,

For some reason I didn't get notification of your reply. I replaced the ground on my machine and it helped but still cut out if I really longarced out of the puddle.

I'd love to setup something where we couold compare the two. Maybe a PAD weld for 6 minutes out of ten to see how the duty cycle is.

Then follow up on the next 10 ,minute cycle with some 6010/6011 and 7018.

I don't have a very "photogenic" setup right now.

    Re: Received MMA 140

I was able to setup this evening and weld part of a root in a 6" pipe and fill and cap it with E 7018.

The machine did well. I had it turned all the way up for over 7 minutes of arc time in 10 minutes.

Posted the same pics on the weldingweb forum so forgive me for cross posting.

I had the chance at lunch today to run a few GTAW beads. Here are some pics. Forgive me if you have already seen these on another forum.

    Gaustin,
I sure wish I could make beads as nice as yours. Maybe someday....
