First day fundamentals welding class SMAW downhill

This is my first day of welding class. Almost no experience before today. So happy to get a chance to sit down and just burn rods. Any and all advice is welcome. I am really not sure about stopping in the middle and picking back up with another rod. It just looks bad and leave my puddle pushed in from the arc force.

First day to get in the shop to weld that is... I had a really good time just burning rods. Yes, just stick 6011 today. I was doing well with flat so the instructor had me weld downhill. I figured out real fast that downhill doesn't get the penetration like uphill does. I will try some uphill next Saturday. I know you guys that have done this for years will give me the business on how bad this is but I was happy for my first time. I have done a little over the years with other folks welders but never had any real chance to sit and just weld again and again. Can't wait to go back next week.

You'll hear no flak from me. Can't finish if you don't start.

I don't think you'll get "flak" from anyone here. There may be some constructive comments however. I'd say for a first time welder you're off to a good start. It'll take awhile to get the steady hand needed to keep the welds running straight but you'll get it I'm sure.

    "ouch"

Out of quite a few arenas, I think you'll find this group one of the better ones. You'll still hear "No!" when you need to, but the rest of us will still wait for updates to see new talent progress.
