Metal Welding

If you love welding then you may be among those that love to read everything about welding as well as watch shows on welding.  But how often have you seen bad techniques while Metal Welding?  There are very few real professional welders out there but many self made welders that thing they have the process down. What this does is show the novices and the hobbyists the wrong things.  Here are some techniques and safety tips for Metal Welding that will help you on your road to becoming a real professional.

Safety

First and foremost it is important to understand that there is more to being a really good welder than simply running a good bead.  What is important is not only skill but being able to keep safety in mind.  Metal Welding can be an extremely dangerous job if you do not know how to keep safe. A good example of a bad safety example is to be using a cutting torch without safety glasses.

Although this is a very basic process with a lesser intensity in the light that is produced it is still very dangerous if you look at it for too long. If you are unable to follow through even these lesser steps in a weld job how will you keep safe during the real dangerous parts? Another safety mistake that is commonly made by those that thing they are experts is to be welding without the proper safety clothing.  Just imagine what it will feel like when a bit of molten steel splashes on you then you would not make such a mistake while Metal Welding.

Techniques

Before you can start on techniques you will need to have a welder.  Why not check out some of the great Longevity products at www.longevity-inc.com.  A good example of a TIG welder from Longevity is model ArcMate LT-200.  Next, if you want to ensure a proper job while Metal Welding you will want to make sure you do some pre-work checks.  For example, make sure you check for the right pressure settings as well as the size of your tips for what the plate thickness is that you are cutting.  Also, while most welders will tell you to keep at ¼ inch for distance try keeping your tip 1/8 of and inch away from the plate.  Then as long as you keep your travel speed low and steady and keep your aim in that direction you will find a good weld can be had.
Another great tip that helps with keeping a straight weld as well as keeping you under control is to keep your hands relaxed as you roll your torch over the top of your knuckles while you cut rather than drag your hands over the metal.    Metal Welding can sometimes be an exact science and having tips like this just make the job easier for you in the end.
